You do not have access rights to logical disk manager

September 23, 2013

I recently downloaded the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Deployment tools which contains the updated version of the System Preparation tool (Sysprep.exe) for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3.  I extracted the files to C:\sysprep and then launched the utility to Reseal my VMware virtual machine.  After the computer rebooted I received the following error when attempting to open the Disk Management mmc, “You do not have access rights to logical disk manager”.  I was logged in as a Computer Administrator, however I attempted to use another account on the system that was also a Computer Administrator and I received the same error message.  This Windows XP virtual machine was not a member of a domain, instead it was a member of a workgroup named WORKGROUP.  After renaming the workgroup to WORKGROUP2 I rebooted the computer.   I am now able to successfully open the Disk Management mmc.
