Building a VMware vCloud Director (vCD) 5.1 Nested Lab: Part 2 – Software

April 15, 2013

To build your VMware vCloud Director lab you will need the following VMware software which can be obtained from the VMware vCloud Director Product Evaluation Center.

  • VMware vCenter Server 5.1
  • VMware ESXi 5.1 Installable
  • VMware vCloud Director 5.1 (vCD)
  • VMware vCloud Networking and Security 5.1 (vCNS)

You will also need the following Operating System software:

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Note: Please see VMware Knowledge Base Article (2034092) Installing vCloud Director 5.1.x best practices for a complete list of supported RHEL versions.  The RHEL software is used for vCloud Director 5.1.  As of this writing the following versions were supported; RHEL 5 (64-bit) Update 4,5,6, and 8 or RHEL 6 (64-bit) Update 1,2, and 3.
  • Windows Server 2008.  The Windows Server software is used for the Domain Controller, DNS Services, and for the installation of Microsoft SQL or Oracle database software.

And finally you will need the following Database software:

For a home lab installation I would recommend that you use the vCloud Director Appliance, this will remove the requirement for installing a Red Hat Enterprise Linux host and configuring a Oracle or Microsoft SQL server.

If you decide to install a RHEL host to support your vCloud Director installation I highly recommend that you read Kendrick Coleman’s bLOG post How To Install vCloud Director on RHEL 6.2 – No GUI.
